I dwell in a lonely house I know
That vanished many a summer ago,
And left no trace but the cellar walls,
And a cellar in which the daylight falls,
And the purple-stemmed wild raspberries grow.

O’er ruined fences the grape-vines shield
The woods come back to the mowing field;
The orchard tree has grown one copse
Of new wood and old where the woodpecker chops;
The footpath down to the well is healed.

Today – 19th August – is World Photography Day. The day traces back its origins to August 19, 1839 when the French Government acknowledged an invention by Louis Daguerre named Daguerreotype – a photographic process – by announcing it as a Gift to the Free world.

On this day, we are presenting a showcase of 15 shocking yet thought provoking images, which can be considered as the crowning examples of photography, which makes the human mind, stir with emotions. All the images present here can be considered negative or depressing in views but we consider them as prime examples of stirring the right chords in our feelings and can be taken as cues for being more responsible and humane in this world.

NB: Many of the images in this compilation are pretty disturbing, so viewer discretion is advised.

The fields, O Megh, depend on your fruitful rains.
Thus, the hard-working village women
Glance at you with soft, admiring eyes.
Climbing high above the sweet-smelling,
Freshly-tilled plain, you again descend
To rest — then once again head north.

-Meghdoot by Kalidasa
